What The Teff?

Step aside Quinoa… there’s a new grain in town!

Hailing from Ethiopia, the world’s coffee capital is at it again, this time in the form of a teeny tiny super grain… Teff!

The word comes from the Ethiopian Amharic language meaning “Lost” since the grains are so small that they’re hard to find. But not to worry – these little guys start sprouting only 36 hours after being planted, so they won’t be lost for long!

Teff takes home a couple of record-breaking honors. Not only is it the smallest grain in the world, it’s also the fastest sprouting grain. Pretty impressive for something less than half the size of a chia seed!

In the world of Teff, size definitely does not matter. In spite of its small size, Teff also has bragging rights when it comes to being a nutritional powerhouse – it’s high protein, iron and calcium, just to name a few.

As if that weren’t enough, Teff also has 8 essential amino acids. And they’re called essential for a reason. Our bodies use amino acids to produce proteins, energy and help keep our metabolism functioning properly. While our bodies need these amino acids to function, we don’t produce them on their own and rely on getting them from the food we eat. Traditionally we get our amino acids through things like lean meats, poultry and seafood, but now you can get them in a big handful of Cabo Chips too! No more feeling guilty about eating tortilla chips!

Teff is such a successful and widely demanded crop, that this one crop alone has benefited over six million small farmers in Ethiopia dating back to 5,000 BC - now that’s an ancient grain!

Here at Cabo Chips, we’ve harnessed the power of this ancient grain to create the first ever Cantina Style Ancient Grain tortilla chip. Our Ancient Grain variety boasts 100mgs of Omega-3s per serving and joins our four existing flavors of authentically produced cantina style tortilla chips, all made with real ingredients, batch-cooked and made with whole ground Non-GMO corn.
